Aircraft Dry Wash vs Wet Wash: Which Is Right for Your Jet?
Most FBOs will not let you run a wet wash on the ramp any more. That single fact has done more to popularise dry washing than any marketing ever did — but the technique stands on its own merits.
What each method actually is
Wet washing is what most people picture: soap, water, brushes or mitts, and a rinse. It needs a wash rack, containment and a drain permit at most fields.
Dry washing — sometimes called waterless — uses a chemical that encapsulates surface contamination in a lubricating film so it can be lifted off with a clean microfibre rather than flushed away with water.
The regulatory reality
Wash water off an aircraft is not clean water. It carries hydrocarbons, spent de-ice fluid, brake dust with its heavy metals, and whatever solvents were used. In practice this means most ramps prohibit open washing entirely.
Dry washing sidesteps this. Zero runoff means no containment, no permit and no drain. It is why we can work on a transient ramp between flights when a wet wash simply could not happen.
Paint safety
The thing that damages aircraft paint during washing is grit being dragged across it. Both methods can do this if done carelessly.
- Wet washing manages grit by flushing it away with volume. Effective, provided the rinse is genuinely continuous and mitts are rinsed constantly.
- Dry washing manages grit by encapsulating it in a lubricating film and lifting it. Effective, provided the media is turned frequently and swapped often.
The failure mode in both is the same: a tired operator reusing a dirty mitt. Method matters less than discipline.

Dry wash for the overwhelming majority of work, with a dedicated chemical degrease on the belly first where the soot load calls for it. That combination gets the aircraft properly clean without a drop of runoff and without needing a facility.
Where an aircraft has come out of paint or has genuinely extreme contamination, a wash rack is the right tool and we will say so rather than spending six hours doing it the hard way.
