Ceramic Coating for Private Jets: What It Does and What It Does Not
Ceramic coating is oversold almost everywhere it is discussed. It is genuinely useful on an airframe — for reasons that have very little to do with how it looks on the day it is applied.
What a coating actually is
An aviation ceramic is a liquid polymer that cures into a hard, transparent, chemically inert layer bonded to the clear coat. It is not a wax. Wax sits on the surface and washes off; a coating cross-links and becomes a semi-permanent sacrificial layer.
The three things it genuinely does
1. It takes the UV hit
This is the real argument, and it is a big one in Florida. UV is what degrades the resin in your clear coat and produces chalking. A coating sits above the clear and absorbs that load first. It is a sacrificial layer that is far cheaper to replace than paint.
2. Contamination releases instead of bonding
On coated paint, soot, bug strike, de-ice residue and salt sit on top rather than keying into the surface. They come off with far less mechanical effort — and mechanical effort is what wears paint out.
The point of a coating is not that the aircraft looks better. It is that every wash for the next two years is gentler on the paint.
3. De-ice fluid stops staining
Spent glycol is aggressive and it streaks. On coated paint it beads and releases; on bare clear coat it dwells and stains, particularly along the aft fuselage.
What it does not do
- It is not scratch-proof. A coating is thin and hard, not thick and tough. It resists marring; it does not stop a ladder.
- It does not fix bad paint. It is optically clear. Whatever is underneath stays visible, and now it is sealed under a two-year layer.
- It does not deliver meaningful fuel savings. Skin friction changes marginally. Anyone quoting you a percentage is selling something.
- It does not eliminate washing. It makes washing easier and gentler. The aircraft still gets dirty.
Correction comes first, always
The single most common mistake is coating an aircraft that should have been corrected. A coating is a lock. Whatever is under it — swirl, oxidation, water spot etching — is now locked in and can only be removed by removing the coating.
Our sequence is fixed for a reason: decontaminate, correct, measure, then seal. If gloss readings do not come up in correction, we say so before anything gets coated.
Realistic lifespan in Florida
Manufacturers quote three to five years. In practice, on a coastal-based aircraft in Florida sun, plan on two to three, with an annual inspection and a top-up product to extend it.
Heat, UV and salt all shorten coating life, and this state supplies all three generously. That is not a reason to skip it — it is a reason to be realistic when you budget for renewal.
