What Salt Air and Florida Sun Actually Do to Your Aircraft

Basing an aircraft on the Florida coast is a trade. You get the flying, and the environment quietly bills you for it in ways that do not show up until they are expensive.

Chloride is the quiet one

Coastal air carries airborne chloride. It settles on every surface, and unlike soot it is not visible until it has already done work. Where it collects is the problem: fastener heads, lap joints, control surface gaps, the belly seams, and any place two dissimilar metals meet.

Chloride accelerates corrosion by breaking down the passive oxide layer that protects aluminium. Once that layer is compromised, pitting starts, and pitting under paint is invisible until the paint lifts.

Where it starts first

UV: why paint goes flat

Florida delivers a high UV index for most of the year and a lot of clear-sky hours. UV attacks the resin binding your clear coat. As it breaks down, the surface loses its ability to reflect light coherently and you get chalking — that flat, slightly powdery look.

Chalking is not dirt. It is the paint itself degrading, and no amount of washing brings it back. Light correction can remove the degraded layer and expose sound clear beneath, but only while there is enough clear left to work with.

Every time you correct oxidation you spend clear coat. A coating is cheaper than the clear you would otherwise remove.

Water spots that turn into etching

The Florida afternoon pattern is unusually hostile: warm rain lands on a hot airframe and evaporates almost immediately, leaving every dissolved mineral behind as a concentrated deposit.

Left alone through a summer, that mineral load stops sitting on the surface and starts etching into it. At that point washing will not help — it is a physical depression in the clear coat and it needs correction.

Hangared is better, not immune

Hangaring removes UV and rain, which is most of the battle. It does not remove chloride — coastal hangars breathe humid, salt-laden air, and an aircraft that flies is outside regularly regardless.

What hangaring genuinely buys you is time. A hangared coastal aircraft might correct every three years where a ramp-parked one needs it every eighteen months.

Getting ahead of it

  1. Wash on a schedule, not on appearance. By the time it looks dirty the chloride has been working for weeks.
  2. Belly first, always. It is the least visible and the most aggressive area.
  3. Keep a coating on it so contamination releases rather than bonding.
  4. Log gloss readings so you can see the trend rather than reacting to it.
  5. Dry it after rain and washing instead of letting it evaporate.

None of this is exotic. It is a schedule, and the aircraft that get looked after on one hold their paint for years longer than the ones that get attention when somebody notices.
